“People at every level tell me how busy they are with “problems.” They tell me there is no time for purpose. I believe that their problems are real, but I also believe the time argument is an excuse—an excuse with enough real examples to back it up so that it becomes a very “valid” way to avoid learning to operate in a new way.
If we are not committed to learning how to assume the strategic role of purpose finder and vision setter, we will remain in the tactical role of problem solver and information giver. Until we have a change in our mental maps, we will remain slaves to problem solving, we will fail to embrace the whole, we will continue to rationalize, we will stay busy, and we will leave purpose to others.
